Community Outreach

ARC's Team 852 believes strongly in a spirit of community outreach including educating people on the FIRST organization and competitions. The team has been actively involved with mentoring other rookie high school robotics teams.

Community Outreach:
December 4, 2005 --
Team 852 performs a repeat performance, inspiring approximately 1,400 holiday museum visitors with its robot "Chet" and educating visitors about FIRST Robotics at The Tech Museum in San Jose.

2003/2004  Community Outreach & Mentoring

 

Mentoring Team 1458:

Team 852 explained to Team 1458 what to anticipate, materials needed, and resources needed for FIRST Robotics competition and an Athenian control board and old robot were given to Team 1458. Team 852 came over one Saturday and explained the FIRST Robotics process for hours, explained Randy Lam. In fact, Team 852 member Mark Cavolowsky and other Athenian team members drove up to Sacramento to assist Team 1458 when Team 852 did not participate at the Sacramento Regional. "Team 852 member Mark Cavolowsky even went to a hardware store with us to buy needed parts for Team 1458's rookie robot," said Randy Lam of Team 1458.  

 

Mentoring Team 1280:

Athenian student David Brooks and his father, Eugene Brooks, mentored San Ramon Valley H.S.'s Robotics team.  David and Eugene Brooks gave a practice board and robot  (stack attack robot) to San Ramon Valley H.S.'s rookie team.  At the 2004 Silicon Valley Regional, San Ramon Valley H.S. placed second in its rookie year and was awarded the Rookie Inspiration Award.

 

Mentoring:

Dr. Mizusawa encourages a third local school, California High, to participate in the FIRST Robotics program, competing in 2005.

 

Community Outreach:
May 2004 -- Team 852 demonstrates its FIRST robot to visitors on campus for the Athenian Garden Tour & Open House.

 


2002/2003  Community Outreach & Mentoring

Mentoring:

Team 852 accepted students from the three local public schools (California High, Monte Vista H.S. and San Ramon Valley H.S.) as members of Team 852 to give these public school students a chance to participate in FIRST Robotics.

 

Fall 2002 -- The San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) inquired of The Athenian School to learn about the FIRST Robotics program. The SRVUSD serves the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo and San Ramon, California. The school district serves roughly 7,000 students at three high schools.

Community Outreach:
January 13, 2003  --  Team 852 hosts a two-hour Robotics Symposium introducing SRVUSD administrators & principals to FIRST Robotics. Team 852 members and mentors spoke. Sascha Zubryd, 17, explained that FIRST Robotics competition "changed my life completely," and she urged the school district to participate in the FIRST Robotics program. The SRVUSD asks Team 852 to mentor their three local high schools.

 


2001/2002  Community Outreach & Mentoring

International Community Outreach:
March 1, 2002  --  His Royal Highness Prince Andrew's interest in youth training brought him to The Athenian School where he, among other things, met with Team 852 member Mark Cavolowsky to learn about the FIRST Robotics program.
